Then again, the color looks like Chestnut. That'll be my other guess.

No one's guessed it, but here's a hint. It came from my neighbor's yard, and yes it's indigenous to the USofA.

I think pepper trees look like that split open but the bark looks to dark.

Hi Hesh:

Thanks for the welcome! Currently I'm an enthusiastic luthier-in-the-making.

Spell check.....thesaurus....grammer editor sign me up!

Al: I'll take maple (sugar?) for $100.

If that fails, then I'll opt with Hesh as I'm sure this "wood" sample won't float either!

Sassafrass.

I think that's with four s's, not five.
So: Sassafras.

Even though I'm liking Black Locust as a guess now....

No again. Cumon you all can do better than that. It's a common tree in southern Illinois.

man-o-man, wish the picture wasn't so blurry. Is it a true rosewood that grows in Florida but is considered a weed tree in the rest of the world??

If you have the Google toolbar installed their is a spell checker on it that works on web forms and forums..give it a try. It'll even separate words run together.
